Description

Left sheet of a triptych. In the play Asagao nikki the handsome young man Miyagi Asojirō ventures to the Uji River to watch the fireflies in the evening cool. There he encounters Miyuki, the daughter of an influential lord, and it is love at first sight. He write a poem on her fan about asagao (morning glory flowers). Afterwards, fate separates them for a long time, but eventually they meet again in the port of Akashi, when Asojirō follows the sound of a voice singing his asagao poem. Miyuki decides to follow her heart and leave her father's side, but just as she is about to jump from her boat unto Asojirō's, a strong wind drifts them apart. Miyuki only manages to throw her fan with Asojirō's poem towards him before they are separated forever.
