Description

Hirokōji (‘Wide Lane’) was a spacious terrain at the western end of the Ryōgoku Bridge, of which the purpose was to stop the spread of potential fires. It was also a lively entertainment district with numerous market stalls, small theatres, and teahouses, one of which is illustrated here together with Ichimura Uzaemon XII (1812–1851).
